OVERVIEW

Regenerative Medicine

The Future of Medicine

Regenerative Medicine aims to replace organs or tissues that were damaged by disease, congenital issues, or trauma with the current clinical technique that focuses basically on treating the disease symptoms. The tools utilized to attain these results are cellular therapies, tissue engineering, artificial organs, and medical devices.

Combining these methods can enhance our body’s natural healing process in the areas of the body where it is most needed. It can equally hijack the function of a critically damaged organ. The field of Regenerative Medicine is still new, and it assembles experts in chemistry, biology, engineering, computer science, genetics, robotics, medicine, and other relevant fields to discover solutions to some of humanity’s most challenging problems.

When invaded or injured by disease, our bodies can defend and heal. And if we could harness this healing power of the body and then enhance this healing process in a proper clinical way?

Regenerating Medicine is an exciting field; it works to ensure that the functions and structures of previously damaged organs or tissues are restored. It equally works in drafting solutions for permanently damaged organs. This treatment approach aims to find a method to cure injuries and diseases which were previously thought untreatable.

The National Institutes of Health defines regenerative medicine as “the process of creating living, functional tissues to repair or replace tissue or organ function lost due to age, disease, damage, or congenital defects.” 1 The hope is to restore damaged tissue that will not adequately heal on its own.

Regenerative medicine treatments can be divided into three methods:

  1. Cellular therapies facilitate healing by injecting or placing live cells into the patient.
  2. Tissue engineering replaces or repairs damaged tissue with natural tissue, man-made tissue, or a combination of both.
  3. Other therapies that attempt to trigger the body’s natural ability to heal tissues without introducing new cells or tissues.

These methods can enhance our body’s natural healing process in the areas of the body where we need it the most.
