Low-Level Laser Therapy

The laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Laser light is collimated, monochromatic, and coherent. A device that produces such light is a laser. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is utilized by some physiotherapists to treat many musculoskeletal conditions. This treatment is a non-invasive procedure that produces a single wavelength of light which doesn’t emit any heat, vibration, or sound and is also known as biostimulation or photobiology. The therapy is believed to enhance the function of fibroblasts (connective tissue cells), speed up fibroblasts repair, and reduce inflammation. Laser devices with various wavelengths (632nm to 904nm) are utilized in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

What is Low-Level Laser Therapy?

The body can heal when low-level laser therapy is used to improve cellular health. It is a non-drug and non-invasive treatment for almost all musculoskeletal conditions. It has no side-effects and can be administered to patients of various ages. This therapy can be used to treat health conditions like back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, sciatica, tendinitis, and bursitis. Other conditions like fibromyalgia and CRPS also see positive response from this form of treatment.

How it Works

When specific wavelengths of light in precise amounts are administered to the painful or injured area, the light is absorbed and transformed into energy. As that energy is restored to the cells present in the injury site, oxidative stress will decrease and the body’s natural healing process will activate in response.

Effects of Low-Level Laser Therapy

The results of low-level laser therapy which are crucial for physiotherapy and enhancing other treatments as therapeutic methods includes:

  • Pain relief
  • Reduce inflammation (typically occurs within hours to days)
  • Enhanced tissue regeneration: Low-Level Laser therapy stimulates cell proliferation of keratinocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and lymphocytes.

Low-Level Laser Therapy in Physiotherapy

Low-level laser therapy is used in physiotherapy for the reduction of inflammation, pain relief, and accelerated tissue regeneration. Conditions that can be treated include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis of the ankle, hip, and knee.
  • TMD
  • Low back disc degeneration
  • Shoulder or hip bursitis
  • Sciatica
  • Disc herniation
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Tendonitis
  • Reduction of pain and volume in lymphedema
